Barber & Hanson

June 27, 2026 (SAT) @ 7:30pm

Santa Monica College Performing Arts Center*
Eli and Edythe Broad Stage
1310 11th St, Santa Monica

This powerful and richly expressive program celebrates the brilliance of American orchestral music while also exploring the fascinating influence of Hollywood and the cinematic sound world that helped shape 20th-century music.

The evening opens with Samuel Barber’s Essay No. 2—a thrilling and dramatic orchestral work filled with sweeping lyricism, rhythmic drive, and emotional intensity. We are also delighted to welcome rising violin star Aubree Oliverson to perform Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s legendary Violin Concerto—one of the most beloved and dazzling violin concertos ever written. The concert concludes with Howard Hanson’s Symphony No. 2, the “Romantic” Symphony—one of the great American symphonies of the 20th century. Sweeping, noble, and uplifting, Hanson’s symphony captures a uniquely American sound world filled with warmth, optimism, and expansive beauty.
